Mundo Catering had a big job between May 2021 and July 2021. What was it, you ask? Catering for the watch-from-the-edge-of-your-seat supernatural teen drama, Girl in the Woods!
This TV show follows the journey of a girl named Carrie, who runs away from a “mysterious, cult-like colony that guards the world from monsters hidden behind a secret door within the woods.”
From bearing with the weather to the uncertainties of COVID, the experience had its challenges, but it was also a lot of fun. The nine weeks we spent on the set of season one of Girl in the Woods was incredible, and our fingers are crossed for season two!
Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at our film catering experience.
favorite thing about catering for girl in the woods
Due to COVID, we had no idea what to expect in the film production world, so our favorite part was that we had a job at all! We sent out proposals for a couple of shows and didn’t hear back.
A week before both shows started (at the same time), we were hired, so we raced last minute to prepare and ensure we had enough people to help out. It was challenging, but we were so excited to be busy and able to keep our team working.
memorable experiences
We’ll never forget the wind. We set up several canopies for people to sit under, which stayed put for multiple days. More than once, we arrived to find our canopies scattered across the field because the wind was stronger than our sandbags and stakes. We ended up losing seven canopies during the filming.
We were also required to get multiple COVID tests every week, and that meant that if someone called in sick, it wasn’t easy to replace them. Javier or Sarah had to test just in case they had to fill in at the last minute.
Thankfully, we had a great crew and didn’t have to deal with this often. However, it was an added stressor that we would never have imagined dealing with before 2020.
what we served
We started out with high winds, rain, and cold days, and we ended during 2021’s famous heatwave. We made sure to have plenty of water for our employees, and we experimented with fully cold menus for the cast and crew, since no one could stomach a hot meal because it was so warm outside.
We served pasta salads, fruit salads, quinoa tabbouleh, chicken salad, shrimp cocktail, etc. Watermelon gazpacho, coconut-peach soup, and smoothies were also big hits! In fact, we always ran out of smoothies whenever we sent them as a breakfast option.
celebrity sightings
On the first day, Mundo Catering’s owner, Sarah, delivered the food by herself because it was a smaller crew. She had the meals labeled for those with dietary restrictions so that it’d be easier for everyone to sort through the options.
She asked the first group that came through the line if they had any dietary restrictions and handed out their meals. After asking one woman for her name (to which the woman replied, “Krysten”), Sarah wondered why she sounded so familiar.
A few minutes later, she realized that it was Krysten Ritter–Marvel’s Jessica Jones! It is definitely more challenging to recognize people when they’re wearing masks.
